First of all, I wish to express my sincere thanks to each of you present today for your efforts in assisting Professor Zhou and I to advance this memorandum of understanding between our respective universities. At Deakin University’s institute for Frontier Materials, a major research and development theme centres on “advanced materials for built infrastructure within a circular economy”.  The industrial minerals focus of the QingYang Institute for Industrial Minerals can provide a key link to industrial mineral resources, in particular, limestone, calcite, dolomite and, clay minerals which are required for modern built infrastructure.
This MOU between Deakin University and Qing Yang Institute for Industrial Minerals is an official recognition of Professor Zhou’s and my own on-going informal, yet fruitful, research collaborations, and it is hoped that the MOU will provide us all with a framework to advance our mutual research interests in the use of industrial minerals and various waste resources as materials for “green and sustainable” built infrastructure with the context of a circular economy.
The MOU specifically provides a framework for facilitating collaborative research project development, exchanging ideas and publications, convening mutual workshops and also promoting institutional exchange of students and staff. Potentially, further collaborations may be implemented between our institutions for funded projects within the China-Australian governmental programs run by our respective governments.
On a personal note, I consider this an excellent opportunity for the two of us to advance some of our research ideas together, but also solve some of the more pressing issues with regards to infrastructure materials and the industrial minerals industry.  With concrete being the single most used man-made material worldwide, its total carbon footprint is considerable (about 8% of the global CO2-equivalent) and means to reduce that, while still maintaining the strict performance attributes required for built infrastructure, requires serious research and development. I consider this collaboration, now officialised with the signed MOU between our respective institutions, to be an important first step in enabling us to jointly tackle some of these issues.
On that note, I thank you all again for helping us get the first DKU-QYIM MOU Workshop on Carbon-neutral LC3 (limestone, cement, clays) and Dolomite Materials off the ground and running.

青陽非金屬礦研究院-迪肯大學國際合作協議(
(MOU)是對周教授和我本人正在進行的、非正式的但富有成效的研究合作的正式認可,該國際合作協議(MOU)能夠為我們提供一個框架,能推動我們在循環經濟的背景下利用工業礦物和各種廢物資源開發作為“綠色和可持續”建筑基礎設施材料,對此我們雙邊也有著共同興趣。
該國際合作協議(MOU)主要目的有:確立合作研究項目、
促進相互交流、共同發表科技論文、相互支持召開科技研討會和青陽論壇,以及促進員工之間的互訪,也有望促進我們的兩個機構之間共同申請中澳政府制定的科技合作項目、獲得資助并實施合作項目。
就我個人而言,我認為這是我們兩機構共同推進一些研究的大好機遇,有助于解決一些關于基礎設施材料和
非金屬礦礦物產業需求的問題?;炷潦鞘澜缟鲜褂米疃嗟娜嗽觳牧?,其總的碳足跡是相當大的(約占全球二氧化碳排放當量的8 %);要想減少碳足跡,同時仍然保持建筑基礎設施材料所需的嚴格的性能,需要共同認真研究和開發循環經濟型建筑基礎設施的先進材料。我們之間簽署的國際合作協議(MOU)的正式生效,是促使我們共同解決上述科技和產業問題的重要的第一步。
最后,我再次感謝大家幫助和支持青陽非金屬礦研究院-迪肯大學之間
簽約開展國際合作和召開第一次有關“碳中性”LC3(石灰石、水泥、煅燒粘土)和白云石基新型材料工作研討會。
